About this event

This event will focus on the challenges caused by disordered eating in education, health and social care settings.

Hospital admissions for eating disorders have increased by 84% in the five years to May 2022 according to the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ analysis of hospital data.

Children and young people with eating disorders are the worst affected with a rise of 90% in the five-year period 2016–2021.

The Priory quote research that states that “most eating disorders develop during adolescence”.

In Browne Jacobson’s Shared Insights Safeguarding Forum, they will discuss how professionals involved in the education, health and care sectors can address concerns around autonomy of an individual patient, pupil or service user and where that autonomy could and should be restricted (and how).

The session will be chaired jointly by Ed Pollard, Partner specialising in advising health and care providers, and Vicky Wilson Senior Associate and specialist in advising education providers.

They are also delighted to be joined by Sam Channon, Chief Operations Officer at West Sussex Alternative Provision College.

This discussion will include a focus on:

  • Long stay patients and the involvement of schools
  • Policies
  • Data Protection
  • Deprivation of liberty
  • Social media
  • Choices of eating
  • Mental health and access to counselling
  • Sharing information
  • Dealing with complaints
