Inguinal Hernia Repairs or Laparoscopic

Freedom of information request details

FOI request date:

Service: Claims Management

The following information was requested:

I wish to write an article on ligation related to inguinal hernia surgery to increase awareness of how we, as surgeons, can reduce negligent claims.

I would like to analyse data from the last 20 years for patients who have had inguinal hernia repairs either open or laparoscopic. These operations may be listed as: Inguinal hernia, inguinal herniorrhaphy, inguinal hernioplasty, laparoscopic hernia repair, TAPP – transabdominal preperitoneal repair or TEP – totally extraperitoneal repair.

Would it be possible for the NHS resolutions information governance group to consider providing the detailed dataset listed below for each case?

• Date of negligent claim                                                 • Age + gender

• Type of hernia                                                                • Type of operation

o Inguinal or inguinoscrotal                                              o Open or Laparoscopic

o Unilateral or bilateral                                                      o Mesh or no mesh

o Primary or recurrent

• Reason for negligent claim                                     • Nature of injury

• Outcome/Verdict                                                       • Reason for verdict

• Pay out amount

If there is anyone interested in working with me on this and similar projects, I would be more than happy to collaborate.
