Each year, we receive around 900 requests for advice from healthcare organisations with concerns about the practice of individual doctors, dentists and pharmacists. The advice we offer focuses on:
- the fair and effective application of the healthcare organisation’s own local performance management and associated procedures
- good practice in relation to local case management and investigation
- helping to identify and consider options available to the healthcare organisation to address and resolve concerns raised about an individual’s practice
- signposting available avenues of professional support and other resources
We are also able to provide advice directly to practitioners who may, for example, be concerned about some aspect of their own practice, want help clarifying procedural aspects of the management of their case or wish to access advice about rebuilding their skills after a career break. We can also provide information about other avenues of support that may be available to practitioners.
Our advice is provided by an established team of Advisers, comprising senior staff who are aligned regionally to specific healthcare organisations and NHS regions across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In April 2023, we welcomed eight Associate Advisers to our Practitioner Performance Advice service. These experts span a range of specialties and will support in the delivery of our growing team review service.
Insights
Our Insights publications share analysis and research which draw on our in-depth experience providing expert, impartial advice and interventions to healthcare organisations to effectively manage and resolve concerns raised about the practice of individual healthcare practitioners.
To support theĀ fair management and resolution of concerns, we have published an Insight which analyses the casework of Practitioner Performance Advice from 2017/18 to 2021/22. The aim of this publication is to understand if there are any trends in the practitioners we advise on and patterns of concerns reported to us by employers and contracting bodies.
