From 1 April 2010 until 31 March 2020, NHS Resolution identified 193 paediatric medication error claims concerning children under the age of 18.
Of these, 91 were settled with damages paid, 61 without merit and 41 remain open, costing the NHS more than £19 million. This includes payments for claimant legal costs, NHS legal costs and damages although the cost will be higher when we factor in costs associated with periodical payments.
To share learning from clinical negligence claims with healthcare professionals, NHS Resolution has also published another seven ‘Did you know’ information leaflets relating to medication errors. These cover high level medication errors and medication errors in maternity, general practice, anti-coagulants and anti-infectives.
