Paediatric Claims (FOI_7727)

Service: Claims Management Speciality: Paediatrics

The following information was requested:

I am writing under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to please request the following information relating to paediatric claims. Please provide the following information:

  1. The number of clinical negligence claims received for financial years 2021-22 through to 2024-2025 relating to paediatrics. Please provide the information broken down by individual NHS Trust and by injury category if possible.
  2. The number of settled claims relating to paediatrics by financial year for the years 2021-2022 through to 2024-2025. Please provide the settlement amounts as well as the information by Individual NHS Trust and by injury category if possible.

Comparison of Annual Report and Accounts with Excel statistics (FOI_7723)

The following information was requested:

This is not a FOI request but I am looking to clarify some data in the latest Annual Report Statistics 2024/25 and I don’t know who to contact and I wondered if you could help. Annual statistics – NHS Resolution

Sheet B has a breakdown by category but there is also data for this in the latest Annual Report itself. The percentages in the Annual Report do not coincide exactly with the numbers (if calculated as percentages) in the All Claims table in Sheet B. Annual Report percentages are slightly higher for the larger categories. For example, if you combine the 2 obstetrics categories in the Annual Report graph Figure 18 the percentage is 11.2% (10.1 + 1.1). In Sheet B combining the figures for obstetrics in lines 11 and 12 (239 and 1,047) and calculating this as a percentage of total claims (line 31) this comes to 8.9%.

Is there a reason for this or am I missing something?

Home Birth (FOI_7724)

The following information was requested:

Follow up to – FOI_7690.

What information is easily retrievable from your system that could support research into incidents occurring during NHS home births in England?

For example, are there any:

  • categories, codes or sub codes that commonly include home birth cases?
  • claim descriptions, sub specialties, or free text fields that you can search without exceeding the FOIA cost limit?
  • datasets, tables, or high level summaries that may indirectly capture relevant incidents (e.g., “birth outside hospital”, “community midwifery”, “delayed transfer”, etc.)?
  • previously extracted statistics, examples, or anonymised case summaries that relate to births occurring outside hospital settings?

Any information that can be released within FOIA limits, even if broad or partial, would be extremely helpful for my research into safety incidents during NHS home births in England.

Band 6 roles (FOI_7720)

The following information was requested:

I am writing to request the following recorded information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

  1. How many staff members at NHS Resolution employed at Band 6 are working in managerial roles?
  2. How many Band 6 staff members have roles focused primarily on project work (i.e., non-managerial project based responsibilities)?
  3. How many Band 6 staff members undertake both managerial responsibilities and project focused work?
  4. For those undertaking both management and project duties, how many staff do they line manage?

If possible, please can you provide this information broken down by job title or team, but without identifying any individuals.

Medication Error (FOI_7714)

The following information was requested:

In a previous FoI response you provided details on the number of claims and the payments made to people issuing claims under the category ‘medication errors’. Could you please provide me with similar information, specifically:

  1. I would like to know the number of successful claims paid out by NHS Resolution in the last financial year (2024/25) as well as the total amount of compensation paid to these claimants in each financial year?
  2. Could you also supply me with tables showing the aggregate totals for medication error claims for the last five financial years which give (a) the number of successful claims, (b) damages paid, (c) defence costs paid, (d) claimants cost paid and (e) total paid broken down by the speciality.
  3. Could you also supply me with tables showing the aggregate totals for medication error claims for the last five financial years which give (a) the number of successful claims, (b) damages paid, (c) defence costs paid, (d) claimants cost paid and (e) total paid broken down by the main type of harm. Please provide this in a similar format to a previous FoI response.

Please note that for all these questions I require the data to be provided based on the year the claim was paid out rather than when the incident took place, the claim was lodged or liability was accepted.
