Our webinar on 30 September, chaired by Ellen Nicholson, Safety and Learning Lead (General Practice) at NHS Resolution, explored key challenges affecting women’s health in primary care, and the importance of listening to concerns, recognising symptoms, addressing barriers, and improving continuity across healthcare pathways.

Dr Paula Cowan, GP and National Women’s Health Speciality Adviser at NHS England, discussed the disparities in women’s health, and how inequalities linked to deprivation, ethnicity and disability can contribute to poorer outcomes.

Victoria Wilkins, Associate Safety and Learning Lead (North) at NHS Resolution, shared learning from claims that identified opportunities to strengthen VTE risk assessment during pregnancy and the postnatal period, improve communication between primary and secondary care, and support timely diagnosis and treatment.

Samantha Thomas, Safety and Learning Lead (Midlands and East) at NHS Resolution, delivered claims analysis relating to delayed diagnosis of cancer and highlighted themes including fragmented care, repeated presentations before diagnosis, safety netting and referral processes.

Dr Julie Oliver, GP and Chair of the Primary Care Women’s Health Society, explored common presentations of gynaecological cancers through case studies, reinforcing the importance of thorough assessment, recognising red flags and making timely referrals where cancer is suspected.
