Correction to NHS Resolution’s written evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee (HSCSC) on the safety of maternity services in England

Date published:

NHS Resolution has written to the HSCSC to correct an error in its written submission to the committee. A copy of the letter is here.

The correction amends reference to the cost of maternity claims in 2019/20. NHS Resolution’s written submission of 14 September 2020  stated:

‘In 2019/20 NHS Resolution paid out £2.3 billion in compensation and associated costs for maternity claims equating to 40% of payments overall. The estimated compensation costs of maternity incidents during the 19/20 year under our main indemnity scheme, the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) is £8.3 billion, of which 69% relates to maternity’

The corrected statement reads:

‘In 2019/20 NHS Resolution paid out £2.3 billion in compensation and associated costs, with maternity claims equating to 40% of payments. The estimated compensation cost of incidents during the 19/20 year under our main indemnity scheme, the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) is £8.3 billion, of which 69% relates to maternity’.
