NHS Resolution’s Practitioner Performance Advice service is expanding its offer to help organisations manage performance concerns fairly, consistently and compassionately with the wider rollout of the Compassionate Conversations programme.
What it is:
The Compassionate Conversations programme equips staff with the insights, tools and materials to harness the power of compassion in performance conversations. Delivered through evidence-based, facilitated workshops and a Train the Trainer model, it promotes psychologically safe dialogue and gives delegates greater confidence to approach conversations about performance with compassion, empathy and self-awareness.
What it includes:
- An evidence-informed Train the Trainer programme, including a half-day facilitated workshop for delegates, a delegate pre-workshop workbook and a full-day Train the Trainer session.
- It also provides a structured approach to developing confidence and capability, and supports local learning through programme materials and ongoing engagement with the Education team.
Why it matters:
The success of Compassionate Conversations is closely linked to creating the right conditions, including psychological safety, so that people can be open, learn and address issues without defaulting to punitive responses.
What we have done so far:
Delegates and trainers have reported personal development in self-compassion, awareness and confidence in approaching challenging performance conversations. Early evaluation data shows average confidence to initiate a compassionate conversation increased from 3.3 to 4.1 out of 5.
