Digital transformation in action

Date published:

In May 2025, NHS Resolution successfully launched the Performer and Healthcare Professional Check – a digital service designed to support patient safety, compliance, and operational efficiency across the NHS and wider healthcare system.

Replacing the former Fitness to Practise Search, the new service provides a modern, accessible and reliable platform for healthcare organisations and partners to both quickly and securely validate the credentials of healthcare professionals and body corporates.

The service is already proving to be a vital tool for the NHS and beyond with an average of more than 400 users submitting 1,000 Healthcare Practitioner Alert Notice (HPAN) and Performers List Regulations (PLR) search requests a day, receiving instant results and saving valuable staff time.

Through this new platform, NHS Resolution is helping healthcare organisations to reduce administrative burden, strengthen governance, and make critical information available at speed, supporting employers to deliver a workforce that is safe, effective, and fit for the future.

Delivering benefits for the NHS and partners

Hosted on the NHS Resolution website, the Check offers a range of improvements compared with the legacy system:

  • Wider accessibility: now available outside of the Health and Social Care Network (HSCN), opening access to locum agencies and independent providers.
  • Enhanced support: a dedicated helpdesk provides users with onboarding and technical assistance.
  • One-stop service: searches can now be made across both NHS Resolution Primary Care Appeals and Practitioner Performance Advice data in one place – significantly streamlining NHS Resolution internal processes while saving users valuable time.
  • Stronger safeguards: built-in controls help ensure only authorised organisations can make PLR searches, improving data security and integrity.
  • Future-ready platform: built to grow with user needs, with further enhancements guided by feedback.

Early user feedback is positive

User research carried out in June 2025 shows the service is already having a strong impact:

  • 98% of users said it was easy to access first time.
  • 96% rated usability as good.
  • 95% are satisfied with performance.

For many, the difference is transformative:

“Very easy to use and results comes back in a second – a great improvement on few weeks of waiting previously.” – Locum agency user

“The site is already a vast improvement on the previous service.” – NHS Trust employee

“The fact it is accessible on home WiFi is a valuable improvement.” – NHS Trust employee

The research also identified areas for future improvement, with users highlighting desirable features which would further improve operational efficiencies. These insights are now helping to shape the service roadmap, ensuring users are very much kept at the heart of design.

Supporting the NHS 10 Year Health Plan and looking ahead

The launch of the Performer and Healthcare Professional Check is more than a technical upgrade. It represents an important milestone in NHS Resolution’s ongoing commitment to safety, assurance, and innovation.

Aligned with the digital transformation ambitions of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, the service will continue to strengthen how the NHS and its partners work together – ensuring the workforce is safe, compliant, and ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
